About Kennebec Behavioral Health
Kennebec Behavioral Health Skowhegan Clinic is part of a mental healthcare organization with clinics throughout Maine, including the outpatient clinic in Skowhegan. The clinic offers many services, including CARF accredited treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders. In 2024, the combined clinics served over 18,000 clients in 300 towns in Maine. This clinic accepts Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurance.
Recovery in Skowhegan, Maine
Located near the banks of the Kennebec River, Skowhegan was once the heart of the state’s logging industry. Skowhegan is about 55 miles west of Bangor, and it’s 90 miles from Maine’s largest airport in Portland.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
The clinic specializes in treating adults with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or other mental health challenges. Treatment begins with a screening, assessment and evaluation, after which the treatment team will develop a customized treatment plan.
I think clients will appreciate a customized plan that includes a combination of different therapies depending on their situation. You’ll work on relapse prevention strategies and participate in group and community education.
Risk Reduction and Prevention Services
The clinic offers a variety of risk reduction and prevention services in addition to SUD and mental health treatment. Some of these services include alternative sentencing, intervention programs and substance use prevention services.
One of the intervention programs is for youths under 21 with nonviolent offenses. The program is 18 hours, and at completion, the offense is cleaned from the client’s record. The program is run in partnership with the Maine Department of Corrections.
Transitional Housing for the Unhoused in Maine
One of their services that stands out to me is their transitional housing. The organization assists unhoused clients who need additional skills and support to live independently. Housing is available in Skowhegan, Augusta and Waterville.
There are additional rental housing options for clients with mental illness. Their rental housing is a subsidy program that provides independent units for clients who are income eligible. Clients living in the units have access to all of Kennebec’s programs, and the rent subsidy goes directly to the landlord.
