About Horizon House (A Service of Riverside Community Care)

Horizon House is a mental health facility located in Wakefield, Massachusetts. They serve people with mental health issues, including substance use disorder. They have a recovery and employment program designed to increase their clients’ self-worth.

The company provides several opportunities to its clients centered around vocational training and work. You will learn new skills when you are here, and you may eventually obtain permanent employment.

The Clubhouse Program

The clubhouse program is central to the way Horizon House works. A clubhouse functions like a business. Each day, the clients and staff are given a work order to be fulfilled by the day's end.

Everyone is assigned to a work unit. Each unit is responsible for a specific part of the work order. I love that the staff members work in the units right along with the clients. I also like all of the different work skills you can learn.

What Kind of Work Will You Do?

You will have the opportunity to develop computer skills by working on spreadsheets and word processing programs. You may learn culinary skills if you are assigned to work in the kitchen.

They publish their own newsletter, and participants will get to write articles and work on the layout. They even teach people social media skills.

Employment Programs

They have several programs designed to help you obtain employment. The transitional employment plan allows you to return to the workforce at a temporary job with the assistance of a placement manager. A staff member will work with your employer if you miss a day or two.

They also have a supported employment program. Horizon House has a relationship with certain employers and can place you in a permanent job.

Recovery Support Services

The clubhouses offer 12 Step meetings to people struggling with substance use issues in addition to a mental health condition. They also provide basic wellness classes so you can learn about meditation, physical fitness and eating a healthy diet.
