About Growth Works

Growth Works in Garden City, Michigan, offers substance use treatment and collaboration with the youth justice system. They offer youth services, family services and adult services. The center is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Family Services for Parents and Children

Their family services program enables positive interaction between parents and children. I think it’s great that services are offered during the daytime, evenings and weekends to make them more accessible. Their workshops include parent workshops, parent engagement workshops and diversion parent engagement workshops.

They also offer supervised parenting that enables parents to visit with their children. This is done through therapeutic supervised parenting or VOCA victims of crime family pathways.

Referrals for Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Their Garden City location can perform substance use assessments and drug screenings. Adults and youth needing treatment are referred to the Romulus location. This location offers intensive outpatient drug treatment and general outpatient drug treatment.

Treatment in Romulus can be voluntary or court mandated. Intensive outpatient treatment groups meet three times per week, and the general outpatient program meets two times per week.

Support from Your Peers

One service that stands out to me is their peer recovery coaching. Peer coaches are mobile and can come to the client’s location. They can refer clients for substance use treatment, assist in recovery, assist in applying for health care, offer life skills training and assist with obtaining employment. Peer coaches meet with individuals and in peer group settings.

Community Based Treatment Groups

Their chemical dependency and substance abuse treatment program works with clients who are experiencing substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, mental health diagnosis, trauma or criminal behavior. Admission to the program requires an assessment to gather substance use information about the client.

There are several outpatient groups in the community. The first group participants attend is outpatient drug treatment. This teaches clients about triggers, expressing feelings, relationships, family roles and communication skills. Adult and youth groups meet two times per week.

The other group, relapse prevention, is offered after outpatient treatment is completed. This group meets once per week and offers support and therapy to prevent relapse.
