Freedom of Choice Healthcare was located in Union City, New Jersey. They offered outpatient services for clients with substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders. The organization accepted private health insurance, Medicaid and other state financed insurance plans.

They had an income based sliding fee scale for the uninsured and offered payment assistance for eligible clients. Outpatient detoxification was also offered. The facility is now permanently closed.

I noticed that the treatment team had experience serving a diverse clientele. They treated LGBTQ+ individuals, those with HIV/AIDS and those who had dealt with serious trauma or domestic violence.

Veterans, pregnant and postpartum women, and transitional age young adults all sought assistance for addiction here. They assisted clients with not only co-occurring SUD and mental health disorders, but also people with SUD and pain. Pain is often a contributing factor in substance use and addiction.

I like that the center was in Union City and close to several parks and waterways. The Hoboken Waterfront Walkway was a few miles from the facility. The walkway offers dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline and a paved path for walking and cycling.

In addition to outpatient detox, the clinicians utilized multiple modalities to treat addiction and mental health disorders. They offered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and substance use counseling. The facility also offered services such as TB screening and treatment referrals.

Staff members used a trauma related counseling approach since many clients with substance use issues have trauma in their backgrounds. Clients could attend 12 step meetings at the facility, and they offered brief intervention services. Clients engaging in medication assisted therapy (MAT) were accepted, though they did not prescribe the medications at the facility.
