About Durham Center Access
RI International operates the Durham Recovery Response Center, formerly known as the Durham Access Center, in Durham, North Carolina. They provide crisis support for adults and have a 23 hour observation unit along with short term stabilization care. I like that there are no fees for services here, as they are funded by local Medicaid funds.
Peer Led Crisis Support in Durham
The core of the Center’s program is having peer support for everyone involved in the program. Having someone on your side that has been through what you’ve been through can make stabilization easier and help you move into longer term treatment.
They aim to reduce symptoms and prevent harm while helping you move forward into recovery. They work to create a compassionate, inviting environment with clinical experts and peers providing the care you need.
Two Units for Short Term Stabilization and Care
I thought it was interesting that this center has two units. The Retreat has urgent care for behavioral health needs as well as a 23 hour observation unit. This part of the clinic is open 24/7, and they have professionals available to provide detox and withdrawal management, peer support and treatment for mental health and substance use concerns. By the end of the 23 hours, they will have arrangements for you to move to whatever next level of care meets your needs.
The Living Room unit provides short term care that lasts a day or longer. They can provide mental health and crisis stabilization as well as medical detox and withdrawal management. They have peers who will help address your needs while helping you plan for your next step in treatment and/or recovery. You can also get medication support and help with basic needs through social services.
