About First Step House

First Step House is a temporary housing facility located in Des Plaines, Illinois. They house men with alcohol use disorders. They’re a not-for-profit organization chartered by the state of Illinois. The facility provides shelter to eight clients at a time. Men can stay there for up to eight weeks. The service is provided to men in 12 Step programs and need a place to stay.

I thought it was interesting that the management differentiates between people with alcohol use disorder and people who take drugs. If you struggle with both alcohol and drugs, you may stay at this facility. But if you only have a problem with substances and not alcohol, they won’t be able to accommodate you.

What are the Rules for Residents?

The facility is not officially a part of Alcoholics Anonymous, but they do host meetings there. They have 20 AA Meetings a week that are open to the public. Each Sunday morning at 9:30, they have meetings for loved ones of participants. You must attend at least 3 AA meetings at the house to be considered for residency. You must also have at least 2 12-step sponsors refer you.

You must pay $80 a week for rent. You will be charged $160 upon entry. They’re not a treatment center, and they don’t take insurance. You will be provided with a bed and three meals a day. You will be expected to do chores while you are there.

Recreational Activities

The aspect I like best about this place is all the recreational activities they have for residents. They have holiday dances and golf outings. They even have retreats and picnics.
