About Rockbridge Area Community Services Eagles Nest Clubhouse

Rockbridge Area Community Services (RACS) has four locations in Virginia, including the Eagles Nest Clubhouse in Buena Vista. The Clubhouse was opened in 1983 and provides psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) for adults with severe mental illness, which may include co-occurring substance use disorder.

RACS also provides outpatient mental health and substance use treatment at a clinic less than 15 minutes away. The clinics will not turn you away due to inability to pay. They accept Medicaid and other health insurance plans and can help you with payment arrangements as well.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Buena Vista

The PSR program helps those with significant mental illness manage their symptoms more effectively so they can improve daily functioning and independence. The process includes individual coaching, group support and structured activities. I like that PSR teaches you essential life skills that help you live productively, which may include meal planning and cooking, budgeting and other financial skills, conflict resolution and emotional management.

The program also focuses on incorporating community living and addressing all eight of SAMHSA’s Dimensions of Wellness. That means addressing physical, emotional, financial, environmental and spiritual wellness.

Part of this wellness may come from peer support services. As an organization, RACS provides peer support for substance use and mental health. A peer is someone who has experienced similar challenges and can encourage you and serve as a model for healthy living.

The Recovery Mural

Another important part of recovery is expressing your journey and learning from the experiences of others. The Recovery Mural at the Eagle’s Nest allows you to do both.

The images reflect the positive aspects of recovery for many former Eagle’s Nest participants, from gardening to fishing to friendship. One member used the morning sun as his personal reminder that the light chased away the darkness.
