About Criminal Justice Resource Center

The Criminal Justice Resource Center serves individuals involved in the criminal justice system through reentry, diversion, mental health, and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs. The center is on Main Street in iconic downtown Durham, North Carolina. Participants in the program are served in an outpatient or detention setting. This is a county-run program.

Outpatient Treatment in Durham, North Carolina

The center’s Second Chance Program treats clients 18 and older. Clients come on referral from Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC), other service providers or the courts. Individuals referred to the program receive outpatient or intensive outpatient SUD treatment based on their needs.

The SUD programs include group and individual counseling and substance use education. Therapy helps those with co-occurring mental health disorders get to the root of their substance use. By understanding their mental health issues, clients can be more successful in managing their triggers so they can stay sober.

SUD Program for Incarcerated Men and Women

The Substance Use Treatment and Recidivism Reduction (STARR) program is a comprehensive SUD and mental health treatment program that uses a trauma informed treatment approach. I think this is a great program because many people have suffered trauma before and during incarceration.

The program is for men and women and addresses addiction, co-occurring mental health disorders and substance use and misuse. Additionally, they address substance use treatment, anger management, family systems and parenting and vocational training.

Case managers provide links to available resources depending on an individual’s treatment plan objectives. They can also help clients find appropriate housing and treatment after they leave the detention facility. I think the clients and the community can appreciate the program because it reduces recidivism and makes the community safer as clients can return to the community as productive, law abiding citizens.
