About Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center
The Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center is a state operated psychiatric hospital operated by the Department of Health and Human Services in Bangor, Maine. It has 67 beds and can assist individuals dealing with co occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
Court Ordered Mental Health Outpatient Services
Individuals who have a severe or persistent mental illness contributing to addiction can receive court ordered outpatient services here to help with their recovery. You’ll follow an individualized treatment plan and have the support of licensed community providers. The goal is to help patients be able to survive in a community setting without posing a risk of harm to themselves.
With these services being provided on an outpatient basis, I like that there’s time for clients to find things to do in town that can support their healing. One place I noticed is not far from the hospital is Saxl Park, which has walking trails and a large field where you can sit and relax.
Emergency Involuntary Hospitalization for Immediate Needs
An additional service available at Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center is emergency involuntary hospitalization. Your loved one can be held at the hospital for about three days to help prevent them from engaging in harmful behaviors such as substance use or self harm. The staff will determine whether further hospitalization is needed and if they can be admitted on a voluntary basis.
