About Dirigo Counseling Clinic

Dirigo Counseling Clinic in Ellsworth, Maine provided outpatient counseling resources for adults and youth facing substance use issues and other mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. They were part of the local community for over 21 years before closing in August 2025.

Convenient Addiction and Mental Health Counseling

One reason I find outpatient treatment such a good option is convenience and flexibility. The clinic offered a more intensive treatment program that included structured therapy sessions several times a week in addition to standard outpatient counseling services.

Their counseling approach focused on creating a supportive and uplifting environment for clients. As Shelly Dyer, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, said “The most satisfying part of counseling is when the flame of hope is reignited thereby empowering individuals to be the best they can be.

Continued Support Through Aftercare

Aftercare built on the support clients experienced in counseling. The program provided practical steps to maintain recovery. Each client left treatment with an action plan customized to their unique situation.

Staff also helped coordinate care with other healthcare providers and community resources. The clinic shared space with several businesses including a nutrition cafe that served healthy teas and shakes. Goodwill was also in the office complex and offered clients a resource not only for affordable shopping but also for job services.

Help Navigating OUI in Ellsworth

Getting caught up in the legal system is never a pleasant experience but I appreciate the warm and non-judgmental approach the staff used to help clients get back on the road after an Operating Under the Influence (OUI) offense. The center was approved by the state of Maine to operate the Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP). The program is a requirement to protect driving privileges.

With so many clients needing addiction treatment and mental healthcare services, it’s never easy to see a counseling office close. The director of Dirigo Counseling Clinic retired and closed the center this year which left a gap in the Ellsworth community.
