About Waymakers Children’s Crisis Youth Shelter

Waymakers in Laguna Beach, California is a children’s shelter for kids in crisis. These children have run away, are being abused, or are being displaced by their family who are unable to care for the child due to mental health and substance use issues. Other children treated include those who are at risk for one of these scenarios.

Children ages 11 to 17 are offered immediate emergency shelter here. The shelter offers a different option other than hospitalization in a facility that is not specialized in children with these needs and disorders. While this isn’t a dedicated addiction treatment facility, they do help with addiction in youth and families.

Substance Use Counseling and Therapy

The shelter offers a home like feel which will allow your child to quickly become comfortable and at ease with their new environment. Individual counseling will give your child personalized time with a therapist and psychiatrist to address your child’s specific issues.

Group therapy will allow your child to form friendships and have discussions with peers who have similar issues. The children are a source of empathy and encouragement for each other while at the shelter.

Service to Help Build a Healthy Future

Children are counseled on current and future educational achievements. Teens who are close to graduating from high school can receive assistance applying to colleges or trade schools too.

Children are taught how to properly deal with problems that come their way. Life skills development education teaches children how to assert self control when offered substances. They will learn conflict resolution and how to say “no” to the option of substance use.

Through personal therapy, children find their inner strength and realize they have control of their life and environment. This promotes healthy choices when the children reenter the community.

Family Reunification Program

We have seen parents who loved their children but were unable to find a resolution and are concerned about their child’s safety or their own safety. We see the family reunification program at this shelter as a way to slowly allow families to heal broken bonds and teach families best methods for communicating with their child.
