About Black Hawk Grundy Mental Health Center

Black Hawk’s Grundy Mental Health Center is on West 9th Street in Waterloo, Iowa, and is part of UnityPoint Health. They’re situated right next to Bontrager Park. For more than 70 years, this nonprofit outpatient community mental health center has provided treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.

One convenient service I think clients appreciate is that they bill your insurance directly. They accept several types of insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Team Specialists for Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment in Waterloo

The treatment team consists of board qualified or board certified psychiatrists, behavioral health counselors, substance use counselors, psychiatric nurses, and licensed clinical social workers. Psychiatrists do an initial evaluation and assessment to develop the best course of treatment for your addiction and/or co-occurring mental health disorder. Treatment may include medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or mood stabilizing medications.

Social workers provide education and counseling for clients and their families. Substance use counselors also provide education for clients receiving substance use disorder treatment.

Not a “Waterloo” for Supportive Mental Health Services

The team has care coordination for patients transitioning from inpatient to outpatient mental health treatment. The coordinators visit patients in the residential mental health setting to help them get ready for discharge and the move to outpatient treatment.

I like the community support outreach services. These services are for clients with persistent and serious mental health challenges. The goal is to reduce inpatient hospitalizations and residential placements. Services are provided in convenient community locations or even the home. They include crisis intervention, daily living skills training, and medication monitoring to help clients live independently.

The patient assistance program is another great program at this clinic. The program helps uninsured clients by getting them mental health medications through the AmeriCare program and pharmaceutical companies.

Early intervention is crucial to preventing long term mental health and substance use problems later in life. That’s why the school based mental health services are another effective program offered through this clinic. You’ll receive evaluations, treatment, and group therapy.
