Better Today in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, was a small outpatient center where you can get help with addiction without having to leave your whole life behind. They worked with teens and adults, and they had a few levels of care you can pick from depending on what you need. They operated for 30 years before shutting down.

There were regular outpatient sessions, services with more structure like intensive outpatient, or even a partial hospitalization program if you needed something closer to full-time but still wanted to go home at night. They also do one-on-one counseling, groups, and family sessions if you want to bring someone along for support.

What Stands Out

What stuck out to me about this place was how much they focussed on the little details that could make or break recovery. They helped with case management, which means they sat down with you and figured out things like where you’re living, how you’re getting around, and what kind of meetings or programs you should connect with outside of here.

They used approaches that have been proven to work like motivational interviewing, but it felt like they didn’t just stick you in a box. They actually listened to figure out what was going to work best for you. You could even do telehealth if getting there in person is hard.

Who They Help

They worked with anyone from teens to seniors, including people dealing with the court system. They took Medicaid and most insurance plans, and if you were paying yourself, they worked with you on a payment plan. One person said in a review that their counselor there made more of a difference in their life than they ever expected, which said a lot about the kind of people you’ll meet here.

It was right in downtown Hazleton so it was easy to get to and close to other resources if you needed them. Nothing fancy about the space but it felt like one of those places that focussed on helping you figure things out and keeping you on track.
