About The Barry Robinson Center

The Barry Robinson Center is a nonprofit, CARF accredited behavioral health center in Norfolk, Virginia, providing residential treatment for military connected youth ages 11 to 17 years. The center treats emotional and behavioral difficulties alongside co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.

They use a holistic, person centered model. Its team of therapists, teachers, counselors, doctors, nurses and dietitians works together to help young people heal and return home successfully.

Residential Treatment For Military Connected Youth

I like that the center's core offering is a residential program tailored to adolescents from military families, with staff specifically trained in military lifestyle and culture.

Each resident receives an individualized treatment plan built from a thorough assessment, with an average stay of about 6 months and discharge planning that begins on day 1. Care includes individual therapy twice weekly, daily group therapy and activities, weekly family therapy and medication management.

Treatment also incorporates recreational therapy and art activities to support the whole child. Families describe caring staff and meaningful progress, with one testimonial simply stating, "BRC is wonderful!"

Dual Diagnosis Substance Use Care

It’s good to know that for teens facing cooccurring substance use challenges, the center integrates The Seven Challenges program into its broader psychiatric and behavioral treatment. This structured, dual diagnosis approach addresses substance use and mental health together rather than as separate tracks.

An onsite, fully accredited K12 school with small classes keeps education connected to each resident's overall plan.

Access, Insurance and Next Steps

The Barry Robinson Center offers on campus residential care at its Norfolk location near the Virginia Beach border, serving military connected families across the U.S. and overseas.

The center is TRICARE approved and works with most major insurers, along with Medicaid in select states, self pay and financial aid options. Reach out to learn how the center can support your family's path forward.
