About BAIHP Bakersfield American Indian Health Project

The Bakersfield American Indian Health Project (BAIHP) has two clinics, including this one in Bakersfield, California. They serve American Indians and Alaska Natives who live in Kern County. They offer outpatient behavioral health services that include treatment for substance use and mental health disorders.

This clinic is funded by the federal Indian Health Services department. Patients who are American Indians or Alaska Natives should be able to access care for free.

Addiction Treatment Services for Native Americans

The behavioral health department at BAIHP provides a variety of substance use treatment options. They have assessments along with customary individual and group counseling.

I noticed that BAIHP also has a Wellbriety program, which is a culturally focused program for Native Peoples struggling with substance use. It integrates the 12 step model with traditional practices like sweat lodges and talking circles. They also acknowledge intergenerational trauma and its impact on Indigenous communities.

Support for Youth Mental Health and Wellness

I like that the department doesn’t just offer treatment for existing substance use disorders, but they also try to prevent them in the next generation. They have youth prevention and awareness to help prevent substance abuse and support positive mental health.

The youth program includes group education on life skills, self esteem and confidence. They help young people understand what a healthy lifestyle looks like so they can make positive choices.

The program also includes exposure to American Indian culture so that they are aware of their heritage and don’t lose their sense of identity. Youth are integrated into the community through various activities and projects.
